Anne Buckingham Young ’69 to Receive AAVC Distinguished Achievement Award

The Vassar Repertory Dance Theater (VRDT) returns to Poughkeepsie’s Bardavon Opera House this year for their 28th Annual Bardavon Gala on February 27th at 8:00 p.m. and February 28th at 3:00 p.m. Preparations for the gala began at the start of the school year, and included several showings of works in progress last semester. Highlights of this year’s program include ballet great George Balanchine’s Valse-Fantasie set to music by Mikhail Glinka and the classic modern piece The Shakers by Doris Humphrey. Additionally, Solas An Lae, a Rhinebeck-based dance company, have choreographed the company finale, titled Exurgency, taking influence from Irish step-dancing technique as well as contemporary dance. The piece will feature all 35 dancers in the company.

The program also features original works by both faculty and students. VRDT faculty and dance instructors Stephen Rooks, Kathy Wildberger, Abby Saxon, and John Meehan will all present original compositions, and seven student choreographers will showcase new works: Max Hershenow ’10, Dan Ming ’10, Alex Rodabaugh ’10, Nicole Krenitsky ’11, Stephen Xue ’11, and Sara Gabrielson ’12 will stage modern works, while Joey Army ’10 and Caitlyn Lamdin ’11 will present a co-choreographed jazz piece. Tickets for the Bardavon Gala are $9, and are available at Vassar College at the Info Center in Main Building, or the Vassar College Dance office in Kenyon Hall. For an additional charge, tickets are also available through Ticketmaster by calling (845) 454-3388.
