Teaching and Learning

The Loeb welcomes faculty and students from across disciplines to use the museum’s collection in their research and coursework. Loeb staff are available to help with object requests, planning a class session, or devising other projects using the collection.

Galleries

To arrange a self-guided class in the galleries, please contact Amanda Potter, Putnam Assistant Director of Learning and Community Engagement.

Classroom

The Loeb’s Classroom is available on a limited basis for museum visits. It can accommodate a class of up to twenty people. To request works of art not currently on view for use with a class, please fill out this form.

Project Gallery

The Project Gallery is an uncurated, shared space where objects requested by faculty are exhibited for the benefit of student inquiry and research. Because space in the project gallery is limited, two months of advance notice is highly recommended. We can sometimes work within a shorter time frame, but not all such requests can be accommodated. A typical request is 3–5 objects, but we make every effort to accommodate more if needed. To request an object, please fill out this form.

Collection Research

Please search our online collection database to find works of art on or off view. Images of most works in the collection are available for teaching on the museum’s collection database.

Appointments to view specific object record files in the records room at the Loeb may be scheduled by contacting the records room. In your request be sure to include the object accession number, artist, and title for the work(s) you are interested in.

Rights and Reproduction

Images of objects held in the permanent collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center in the public domain can be downloaded for personal and educational use only. No commercial use or alteration is allowed. All information necessary for the proper citation of works in the collection is available in the object records in the Online Collections catalogue. We encourage users to identify works from our collection according to accepted standards and to provide an image credit to the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, so that others may find and use our resources.

To request publication quality images of any work in the collection, please email Art Resource at requests@artres.com. All Vassar College campus community requests can be emailed to loebimagerequests@vassar.edu. For press images, please email tathibodeau@vassar.edu.

Images of copyrighted works are displayed here under fair use, in accordance with the Art Museum Directors Guidelines for the Use of Copyrighted Materials and works of Art by Art Museums and/or Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts. If you wish to use copyrighted images for any purpose, you must seek permission from the copyright holder.

Reproduction of any image for which Artists Rights Society (ARS) controls the copyright is prohibited without written authorization from ARS, 65 Bleeker St., 12th floor, New York, NY 10012.

The Loeb’s photography policy permits photography for personal use only, and is restricted to works of art in the Loeb’s permanent collection (objects on loan to the Loeb may not be photographed). Hand-held cameras only may be used; tripods are not permitted.
