Omar Badessi

Omar Badessi is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Vassar College. His research lies at the intersection of Hispano-Moroccan relationships, focusing on the medical mission of Spanish colonialism in Morocco. He explores how medical discourse portrayed North Africans as degenerate and “curable,” examining the roles of Spanish physicians and nurses as colonial agents who used medical and Christian discourse to legitimize colonialism. Through his research, Omar aims to advance dialogue and reshape narratives around colonialism’s lasting impact on minority groups today, particularly the native Amazigh communities in North Morocco.

As an instructor, Omar advocates for cross-cultural understanding, leveraging language instruction to break down stereotypes and foster cultural sensitivity. He has taught a diverse array of language courses in both Spanish and Arabic, as well as seminars on Moroccan culture, cinema, and contemporary issues. Omar enjoys mentoring his students and directing diversity initiatives. He spearheaded the newsletter “Amigos de Omar أصدقاء عمر,” which aims to foster a sense of belonging, student success, and cultural engagement.

Omar is passionate about directing experiential learning and study abroad initiatives in Morocco. These programs harmonize with his research on Hispano-Moroccan relations, offering students a comprehensive immersion in Morocco’s culture and Judeo-Spanish heritage while engaging in extensive regional travel and Arabic learning.

As a polyglot, Omar has produced educational documentaries in German, Arabic, and English, advocating for intercultural dialogue, delving into the realms of history, culture, and climate protection.
