Take Time to Pay Tribute to our VeteransPlease Pause to Thank our Posse Vets, Faculty and Staff
Veterans Day is a time Americans have set aside to pay tribute to the men and women who are serving or have served in the armed services. The holiday has taken on a special significance on the Vassar campus since 2013, when the first cohort of 11 Posse Veterans enrolled.
Thirty-four veterans are currently enrolled at Vassar, and over the past five years, men and women from all five branches of the Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard – with service in Iraq, Afghanistan and many other parts of the world, have become an integral part of the Vassar community. They join with dozens of faculty and staff who have served in the military before coming to Vassar.
Associate Professor of History Michaela Pohl, an Air Force veteran, said she has profound appreciation for the Posse vets she has met on campus. “I have a lot of respect and admiration for them, and I think we’ll see some of them in important government and administration posts after they get their degrees,” Pohl said.
Associate Professor of Physics Jenny Magnes, who served in the Army as a heavy wheeled vehicle mechanic from 1990 to 1995, offered this advice for those who would like to pay tribute to our veterans: “The best thanks you can give a veteran is to read the Constitution, learn about our government, and vote so that the rights that veterans fought for (and that some died for) are not lost.”
