Vassar to Collaborate on Summer Program for Gifted Students in China3 Faculty Members to Teach Courses in Beijing This Summer
Vassar College announced the formation of a new summer program for high school students in Beijing, China, in partnership with a secondary school for gifted students in China. The college will launch the program with the Diligence & Delight Learning Center (DDC) in Beijing by sending three faculty members there this summer; they will teach specially designed, three-week courses in psychology, music, and film.
“This new program aligns perfectly with one of Vassar’s prime educational objectives, to engage the college in global initiatives,” says Vassar’s president Elizabeth H. Bradley. “We look forward to exploring other ways Vassar and DDC can work together to promote the relevance and positive influence of the liberal arts in China.”
Up to 75 high school students from throughout China, chosen through a competitive application process, are expected to enroll in the courses taught by Associate Professor of Psychological Sciences Carolyn Palmer, Assistant Professor of Music Justin Patch, and Assistant Professor of Film Shane Slattery-Quintanilla. Classes begin July 15 and end August 3.
Groundwork for the new program was laid by Hung Huang ’84, a Vassar trustee from Beijing who introduced DDC co-founder Anne Liu to Vassar administrators. Liu visited the Vassar campus in 2017.
Hung Huang says she is excited to see the program come to fruition. “Vassar Summer School in Beijing is unique,” she says. “It offers Chinese students a chance to experience the liberal arts classroom at Vassar. This understanding will enhance their success as applicants to the best higher education institutions in the United States.”
Vassar College is a coeducational, independent, residential liberal arts college founded in 1861.
