The CFMDE has hosted over 150 events across our campuses since 2018 including 3 international conferences and 6 cross-campus symposia. Below are some highlights of our cross-campus programming.
Reframing the Migrant Crisis: Law, Labor, and the State of Asylum in Uncertain Times
Bard College
April 26, 2024
This symposium shed light on the acute and systemic challenges to our current immigration system, and highlighted the role of local and national organizations working to protect the rights of all immigrants. Highlights included a exhibit of undergraduate research posters and a screening of the documentary BORDERLAND | THE LINE WITHIN, followed by a panel discussion with the documentary’s creators and activists featured in the film.

This collaborative event will spotlight teaching about migration within the CFMDE and imagine future possibilities for innovation. Students, faculty and community educators from all CFMDE colleges are welcome to attend.
Migration and Displacement Studies Research Symposium II

April 15, 2023
Over 40 CFMDE students and faculty gathered at this symposium to celebrate the interdisciplinary and community engaged work being done by students at each campus. The day featured three panels of students presenting their seniors theses or other projects about migration as well as an engaging keynote lecture by Dr. Mariam Rashid titled Unsettling Resettlement.
Lexicons of Migration Conference: Histories, Texts and Human Lives in Translation

Organized by Professor Marguerite Feitlowitz in collaboration with her students, this conference brought together 125 scholars, translators, filmmakers, artists, musicians, students, and more for a weekend full of conversation and networking. Migration and Displacement Studies Research Symposium I

In a triumphant return to cross-campus in-person programming, this event highlighted student senior work and community activism across CFMDE campuses. The day featured two panels of student presenters as well as a panel of Vassar faculty and activists talking about their work in Dutchess county and beyond.
Global Displacement and Mental Health Conference

This conference brought together government officials, healthcare providers, academic institutions, NGOs, funders, and social entrepreneurs to explore innovative ways to address responses to the mental concerns of forced migrants globally. Panels highlighted experiences at the intersection of research, training, education, and policymaking as well as avenues for future collaboration. Consortium faculty and students, joined by local educators and community partners, discussed how the first iteration of the Lexicon of Forced Migration course played out on each campus.
Curriculum Planning Workshop

October 26-27, 2018
This gathering brought together some 90 people, including faculty, administrators, high school teachers, and representatives from other colleges and community groups. In break out groups led by CFMDE faculty, attendees workshopped a skeleton syllabus for a cross-campus introductory course to migration studies, and explored collaborations with local middle and high schools.
