Remarks by the Chair, Board of Trustees

It’s great to see an audience of graduates sitting with their families and loved ones. This is the first time since 2019. Welcome to you all.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to congratulate you on your accomplishment. I also have a few remarks.

It’s often said that the Vassar you’ve gone to is very different from the one I went to several generations ago. That’s true, but it’s been true for every generation of students. Certainly, the early co-ed classes, which I was a part of, were nothing like the all-female classes that preceded us. But today I don’t want to focus on what makes us different, but rather on what we share as Vassar graduates. I have found that there’s a commonality for all generations that defines how we relate to Vassar after we leave.

• For most of you, a member of the faculty has had a profound impact on you. That will stay with you for the rest of your life. It’s something you’ll hold onto.
• Some of the people you’re sitting with will be there for you for the rest of your life. When I talk to Vassar alums from the 1950s through the 2000s and ask about their experience, the one thing they always talk about is the lifelong friendships that they made here.
• Many of you will connect with an older VC alum who will become a mentor, open a door, or give you advice when you need it most. I never would have predicted that among my closest friends are Vassar alums who were here long before I arrived.
• And finally, as the years pass, the value of this education will become more and more apparent to you. This I promise you.

So, while your time here was short, the experience defines you, and this will always be another place you can call home.
