Campus Update
April 30, 2024
Dear all,
I am writing to update the campus. As you may have seen, some students have put up tents on the library lawn this morning. We are actively communicating and the students have said that they intend for the assembly to remain peaceful. We have also confirmed that they are aware of and understand the Campus Assembly Policy (on P. 69-71 here). This policy includes our community expectations around assembly and potential consequences of not upholding the policy.
As long as the demonstration remains peaceful and does not disrupt the learning environment, the college does not plan to remove the tents. The tents are currently set up in a way that allows access to the library and other buildings. This is particularly important as we head into the study period and final exams.
Let us keep in mind that some support the demonstration and some are concerned and find it offensive. At Vassar, we have strong and enduring principles concerning free expression as articulated in the Statement on Academic Responsibility and Respect for Persons, which can guide us in this challenging moment. Additionally, we prohibit discriminatory harassment of any kind.
For so many in our community, these are profoundly difficult times. I remain committed to what unites us, especially our shared mission of learning and seeking a better collective future. May we be patient, compassionate, and understanding of one another–knowing that our differences help make us whole.
Take care,
