Director of the The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center

Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of T. Barton Thurber as the next Anne Hendricks Bass Director of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. Dr. Thurber will begin his appointment on August 5, 2019 and will also hold an appointment as Lecturer in Art.

Dr. Thurber joins Vassar's community after seven years as Associate Director for Collections and Exhibitions at the Princeton University Art Museum where he guided and supported curatorial functions, collections, and special projects—including exhibition planning and implementation, conservation, and collections care. Prior to his work at Princeton, Dr. Thurber was Curator of European Art at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth University for more than a decade. He earned a B.F.A/B.Arch from the Rhode Island School of Design and a PhD from Harvard University, while also studying at the Universita IUAV in Venice, Italy, and pursuing postdoctoral research at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Dr. Thurber 's academic focus was Renaissance Italy, while as a museum leader his work has spanned centuries, cultures, and geographies. Dr. Thurber brings a breadth of knowledge and expertise to The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center and we are excited to welcome him to our Vassar community.

I am very grateful to the faculty, administrators, and alumnae/i who served on the committee that guided the search and selection process, and I would like to express my deep gratitude to James Mundy, who is retiring after directing the Art Center for 28 years.
