The Larry H. Mamiya Memorial Conference Celebrating 50 Years of Africana Studies at Vassar College November 1–3, 2019
Dear Colleagues,
You are cordially invited to a weekend of celebration! An array of scholars and creative intellectuals will be on campus to reflect on the political, philosophical, and creative interventions that sustain Africana Studies as a field and promise to move it forward.
- The proceedings will address several aspects of black experience, among them music and performance, violence and resilience, gender and sexuality, and law and justice.
- Opening address by MacArthur Genius Fellow Saidiya Hartman (Columbia University), keynote speaker Aminatta Forna (novelist), and panel presentations by scholars from Vassar and other esteemed institutions.
- Among the special features of the conference will be a reading by actress Shona Tucker, Associate Professor and Chair of the Drama Department.
- Alumnae/i mingle and lunch on Saturday afternoon.
- Jazz brunch for all conference attendees on Sunday.
