Updates Regarding Campus Safety

Dear Vassar Community,

I am writing to follow up on my earlier email regarding the burglary that took place in the Townhouses last night. I understand that the Office of Residential Life sent an email to students in the Townhouses earlier today sharing some information about campus safety. Dean Alamo has worked with the Residential Life team to make certain that everyone is aware of the need for extra support of students at this time. The Residential Life team is well aware of student safety concerns and they are fully committed to acting as partners in safety with our students.

First, there will be extra staffing support from the Dean of the College area including Safety and Security. Director Sabo will liaise with the Town Police Department to ensure campus safety for all members of the community. Campus safety escort rides and the Campus Shuttle will continue to run. More information about how to request an escort ride and the campus shuttle hours. Please remember to take personal safety measures by keeping your doors locked and not propping open your exterior doors. You may also reach counselors in Metcalf during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. If you need to speak to a counselor after normal business hours, the Counselor on Call is available by calling the Campus Response Center at (845) 437-7333.

In addition, Residential Life and Facilities Operations have collaborated to ensure that students in our apartment areas (Townhouses, Terrace Apartments, and South Commons) who would like to change the locks to their doors can do so free of charge. For more information, please reach out to the Residential Operations Center. Facilities Operations will also be prioritizing any service requests regarding damaged or non-functioning window locks. If you are concerned about the functionality of your window lock, please submit a service request as soon as possible.

Again, both Dean Alamo and I are on campus and available all weekend so please do not hesitate to reach out to us. During challenging or unsettling times, it is critical that we take care of ourselves and those around us.

Please stay in touch with any concerns,
