Sad News: Anne Gittleman

I am writing with sad news. Professor Emerita Anne Gittleman, a member of the French department from 1954–1987, passed away in Madison, Wisconsin on October 24th, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Professor Gittleman was a dedicated teacher and scholar who was internationally recognized and appreciated for the precision of her publications on the medieval French epic. Her main work, to which she devoted decades, was a critical edition of the twelfth-century Garin le Loherenc, published in three volumes in 1996–7. It appeared in the prestigious Classiques français du Moyen Âge series. Professor Gittleman’s edition was awarded the 1997 De La Grange prize by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.
