Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony, The Vassar Institute for the Liberal Arts
October 26, 2024
I could not be more excited than to see The Institute for the Liberal Arts and The Heartwood be launched today! It has been a long time in coming, and we have learned so much along the way. More importantly, we have learned a ton about ourselves and each other—as we have envisioned, championed, revised, negotiated, and engaged each other at all levels: the Board, the faculty, the students, our employees, the alums, the Arlington community, the Arlington Business District and Dutchess Tourism, and town, city, county, and state elected officials.
The “liberal arts” refers to the study of a broad set of perspectives (from sciences to social science to humanities, language, and arts), using inquiry-based pedagogies in the classroom, delivered in a culture of openness, creativity, and equity—to benefit all. The Institute celebrates such an approach to learning and extends Vassar’s presence beyond its campus and its undergraduate students to engage broader audiences in conferences, workshops, and events—all in the service of learning, finding new connections, and building inclusive community. With these efforts, Vassar remains relevant both shaping and being shaped by the world around us.
Thank you to the many and generous donors who made this vision possible. We would not be here without your steadfast belief in us. And I am thankful to the many supporters who donated their time, ideas, practical skills, and emotional support.
