Lily Bradfield ’22 has been awarded this prize in recognition of extraordinary writing of an original play, Blackboard, by the Marilyn Swartz Seven ’69 Annual Playwriting Competition Spring 2021 and the Drama Department. The play was directed by Drama Department alumna Estefania Fadul ’10.

About the Play

Blackboard by Lily Bradfield ’22

Blackboard synopsis: Sophie, the daughter of the dean of an exclusive all-girls private school, is just trying to survive eighth grade when her life is turned upside down. In an attempt to regain control, she inadvertently sends her whole world into chaos. With an act that’s impossible to take back, she shocks the school and herself.

About the recipient: Lily Bradfield is a writer from Brooklyn studying media studies and film at Vassar College. Her work has been featured in Cultured Magazine and literary magazine Deep Overstock, and her forthcoming short film, Clover, which she co-wrote and starred in, will be released soon. She has always loved writing, and is so excited to share her new play with the Vassar community and beyond.

About the Award

The Marilyn Swartz Seven ’69 Playwriting Award was established by friends and classmates of the late Ms. Seven to support an annual playwriting competition open to all Vassar juniors and seniors. After Marilyn Swartz Seven ’69 died of leukemia in 1997 at the age of 50, her classmates, with the help of Professor Emeritus of Drama James Steerman, honored her memory by establishing a fund to support this yearly award.
