“Beauty Pay$”

Nov. 2, 2023, 5:00 p.m.
Location:

Rockefeller Hall 200

The Martin H. Crego Lecture in Economics featuring Daniel S. Hamermesh
Sponsored by the Economics Department

Daniel S. Hamermesh is the Sue Killam Professor Emeritus, University of Texas at Austin and a Professor Emeritus, Royal Holloway University of London. He will discuss the following topics: What is human beauty? How much does it “pay off” in pay and jobs? Are the payoffs the same for men and women? How do the payoffs differ across jobs? Does it pay to try to improve your looks? Does beauty always pay? How much does beauty help in the marriage market? Why do these payoffs exist? Are beautiful people happier? If so, why? Do your parents’ looks help/hurt you? If so, how much?

Should society do anything about this? What current protections exist for bad-looking people? How could additional protections be included in legislation? Would case-law protections arise? Should such protections be imposed—what is the philosophical justification?

Campus community only, please.
