Closing Program—Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence

Sep. 7, 2024, 2:00 p.m.
Location:

Taylor Hall 203 and Loeb Art Center

Join the Loeb Art Center for an afternoon with Bev Gibson, curator and co-founder of Ubuhle, a collective of South African women who have transformed traditional beadwork practices into a new form of art.

This program marks the final weekend of the Loeb’s exhibition, Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence. Ubuhle began 25 years ago on the outskirts of Durban, South Africa, when Gibson and artist Ntombephi “Induna” Ntobela became friends and shared a vision of joining forces to create a platform for women denied formal education–one that would offer both economic opportunities and new forms of creative expression. Gibson will offer insights into the artists’ work and its impact.

Free and open to the public. A reception in the Loeb’s atrium follows.

Sponsored by the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center.
