Slip: Janine Polak
Oct. 30 – Nov. 24, 2024
Location:
College Center, Palmer Gallery
Artist’s Reception: November 1, 5:00–7:00 p.m.
Janine Polak works with materials and images that contain incredible strength and extreme vulnerability: glass stretched thin after melting in the kiln, slip-dipped high-fired porcelain, and drawings of battling and embracing tank tops. Using old socks, tank tops or bits of fabric that are destined for the rag pile, Polak preserves them into porcelain. The resulting objects call to mind cleaning, folding laundry, picking up socks off the floor; the kind of essential work often done by women and marginalized communities, work that is often overlooked, yet crucial to our existence and function of society.
Sponsored by the James W. Palmer III Gallery.
