“Sound or Ink: What’s the Matter?” Sonic Letters in Ancient Hebrew Scripture

Sep. 18, 2024, 8:00–10:00 p.m.
Location:

Blodgett Auditorium

This year’s Dr. Maurice Sitomer Lecture will be a concert given by Victoria Hanna, a Jerusalem-based international voice artist.

Victoria Hanna is a multidisciplinary artist who explores the possibilities of the human voice and language. A rabbi’s daughter, Hanna grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family in Jerusalem. In her childhood she struggled with a speech impediment, which she eventually succeeded to overcome and turned into a tool of self-expression and art. Hanna draws inspiration from ancient Hebrew and Aramaic, and explores the alphabet of these two languages for their visual and sonic potential. In 2015, Forbes magazine selected her as one of the 50 most influential women in Israel, and she was awarded the Rozenblum Award for Outstanding Artists in 2022.

Sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program. This concert was partially made possible by generous contributions from the Office of Cultural Affairs, Consulate General of Israel in New York.

Vassar students will be required to show their Vassar IDs, and all other invited guests will be required to show a valid form of ID.
