Musical Bridges: Dohnányi and Fauré
Feb. 15, 2025, 7:30 p.m.
Location:
Skinner Hall of Music
Fauré Piano Quartet #2 and the Dohnányi Serenade: Faculty members Marka Young, violin, and Marija Ilić, piano, perform two great works that bridged the gap between Romanticism and Modernity. With Lauren Byrne, viola, and Jeanne Fox, cello. Dohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio, following the form of Beethoven’s op. 8 Serenade for String Trio, is infused with the language of Brahms, Schubert, and folk melodies from Dohnányi’s home country of Hungary. Fauré’s Second Piano Quartet, op. 45, unusually impassioned, brings drama, elegance, stark contrasts, and a childhood memory of the sound of church bells brought by the wind in the slow movement.
