Opening Reception and Lecture for Victorian Yellowbacks from the Collection of Marcia McGhee Carter ’62
Class of ’51 Reading Room, Thompson Library
This exhibition of Victorian yellowbacks (cheap versions of novels and other works, often with yellow covers) will open with a lecture by Swarthmore College Professor Rachel Buurma, followed by a reception with student posters and refreshments. The exhibition will be on display in the Library throughout the semester.
Professor Buurma’s talk is titled “I wrote as I read: Margaret Oliphant’s Compositional Narration.” It will touch on “yellowbacks and other print formats as part of the context for Oliphant’s ideas about composition and narration.” This will be followed by a period of questions and answers, and then a showing of posters on Victorian yellowbacks produced by Vassar students.
This event is open to the public.
Sponsored by the Library, English Department, and Global Nineteenth-Century Studies Department.
