The Garbage Monster by Ahmed Moussa
Rosenwald Theater, Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film
Join us for a special screening of a documentary capturing the powerful journey of the Theatre for Climate Justice (TFCJ) Project in Egypt! This film, created by Ahmed Moussa, takes you behind the scenes of The Garbage Monster, an innovative theatrical production that toured Cairo in June 2024, using applied theatre to spark conversation and action around climate change and garbage pollution. The show traveled to displaced communities around Cairo—serving Syrian, Eritrean, South Sudanese, Ethiopian, and other displaced communities—engaging audiences through interactive storytelling and puppetmaking workshops that empowered young people to become active participants in environmental solutions.
This project was made possible through the generous support of the Consortium on Forced Displacement, Migration & Education, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Jill Troy Werner Fund, and partnerships with Dawar Arts, Vassar College, Clowns Without Borders USA, VeryNile, Banlastic, and PSTIC.
About Theatre for Climate Justice (TFCJ): Founded in 2023 by Hannah Gaff and Ahmed Moussa, TFCJ is an applied theatre initiative that brings together local artists, displaced communities, and young changemakers to create performances addressing urgent environmental and social issues.
Sponsored by the Drama and Film Departments.
