Reckoning: Black Lives Matter and the Democratic Necessity of Social Movements—Deva R. Woodly, PhD
Rockefeller 300
Join us for a public lecture on Deva Woodly’s ground-breaking new book, Reckoning: Black Lives Matter and the Democratic Necessity of Social Movements, a political analysis of the emergence of the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL), its organizational structure and culture, and its strategies and tactics. By contextualizing the social movement’s unique political philosophy, Woodly is able to explore radical Black feminist pragmatism (RBFM), along with the measurable political effects of changing public meanings, public opinion, and policy. Woodly interweaves theoretical and empirical observations, rendering both an illustration of this movement and an analysis of the work social movements do in a democracy.
Deva Woodly is an Associate Professor of Politics at the New School. Her latest book, Reckoning: BlackLivesMatter and the Democratic Necessity of Social Movements, which examines how social movements re-politicize public life in times of political despair, was published by Oxford University Press in November 2021.
