Kariane Calta and Benjamin Lotto Receive NSF Conference Grant

Kariane Calta, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, and Benjamin Lotto, Professor and Chair of Mathematics and Statistics—together with colleagues from Skidmore College and Union College—received a grant from the National Science Foundation to co-host the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC) for the next three years.

HRUMC is a regional undergraduate research conference in mathematics that has been held annually since 1994, bringing together about 300 undergraduates and faculty from colleges and universities in the northeast.

The conference aims to engage and inspire undergraduates at all levels and from underrepresented groups and encourage them to persist in the mathematical sciences; learn more about the communities within the mathematical sciences, broadly defined, by interacting and networking with peers and faculty; and share their mathematical research and scholarship by practicing through formal talks. HRUMC; and to encourage students from underrepresented groups and women to participate in the mathematics and mathematics-adjacent communities.

HRUMC offers a full day of research talks; an hour-long keynote address by a well-known mathematical scientist; professional development activities; and engaging discussions across a wide array of topics in mathematics, statistics, and data science. Vassar will host the HRUMC in April 2026; for the first time since 2000, the College will welcome undergraduates back to campus for this exciting event!
