Claflin Lecture Series: “Is the Sun still God? Refilling J.M.W. Turner’s Insurance”
Oct. 28, 2024, 6:00–7:15 p.m.
Location:
Taylor Hall, Room 203
Matthew Hunter, Professor of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University, will speak about his new study.
Professor Hunter is the creator of Wicked Intelligence & Painting with Fire, which explore the intersection of image production, scientific experimentation, and knowledge formation in English art and society. His new study posits the significance of “the actuarial imaginary” in 19th century art, as seen in the case of Turner’s recurrent imagery of catastrophe, disaster, and financial speculation.
The Claflin Lecture Series is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Art Department.
