The Dance Department at Vassar is strongly committed to the arts and nurtures a vibrant community that enables students to combine their passion for dance with their intellectual pursuits. We strive to share our joy of dance while creating a welcoming environment that fosters innovation, excellence and inclusion.

The department welcomes dancers of all levels, offering beginner to advanced courses in modern, ballet, hip-hop, and jazz techniques in addition to improvisation, composition, and movement analysis. There are extensive performance and choreographic opportunities available to students; Dance Department showcases, Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre, and numerous student-run dance organizations hold concerts throughout the year.

Our professional faculty, including alums from Martha Graham Dance Company, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and New York City Ballet, connects students to the wider dance community through master classes, residencies, visiting artists, and field trips to New York City for live concert dance.

The Dance Department cultivates a community that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion through its principles, policies, and behaviors. We affirm that the representation of all races, ethnicities, and identities is critical to the art form. Our department reflects a collaborative learning community that recognizes value in all voices and listens carefully to one another in order to honor our varying perspectives and lived experiences.

We welcome you to our department.

Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre performs works created by faculty, students, and guest choreographers, selected from the current repertory. The program includes a special appearance by dancers from the Parul Shah Dance Company, whose work harnesses the expressive power of Indian classical dance to promote cultural understanding and explore questions around identity and humanity.
